This multiple block linocut was made for a forthcoming exhibition called Island Fortress. Hayling Island is littered with pillboxes and other remnants of WW2 as it sits on a strategic point near to Portsmouth, an important military port. We spent an enjoyable day hunting for them after I had spent a long time trying to spot them in aerial photos (they are not marked on an OS map)
This pillbox, which is a type FW3/22 hexagonal pillbox with a protected entrance, is located on the East side of the island looking out towards Chichester Harbour.
I wanted to give this image a bright, bold colour palette as a vague nod to Rigby Graham's Agia, making the whole thing more Greek Islands than Hayling Island.
